The challenge

What we were working against

The trust's core network was running on switches sixteen years old, in comms rooms where nobody could say with confidence which cable served which ward. Clinical systems could not tolerate unplanned downtime, and there was no natural maintenance window in a hospital that never closes. Medical devices sat on the same flat network as general IT.

The approach

What we actually did

In sequence, including the parts that happened long before anyone touched hardware.
  1. 01

Mapped every live link physically before touching anything, producing the first accurate port map the trust had held in a decade.

  2. 02

Agreed 90-minute change windows ward by ward with clinical leads, each rehearsed against a rollback plan with a hard abort time.

  3. 03

Installed a parallel Cat6A and fibre infrastructure alongside the live estate, then migrated services link by link rather than cutting over wholesale.

  4. 04

Segmented unpatched medical devices onto isolated VLANs with controlled routing, without disturbing clinical workflow.

  5. 05

Handed over Fluke certification for every link, as-built drawings and a labelled patching schedule matched to the CMDB.

The comms room hand-over pack was better documented than anything our previous integrator produced in six years. Every port labelled, every link certified, drawings that matched reality.
