The challenge

What we were working against

The existing wireless had been specified on coverage rather than capacity, so it worked perfectly in an empty building and collapsed in a full lecture theatre. The entire replacement had to happen between the end of resits and the start of term — a hard eight-week window across 34 buildings, several of them listed.

The approach

What we actually did

In sequence, including the parts that happened long before anyone touched hardware.
  1. 01

    Surveyed with capacity modelling based on timetabled occupancy rather than floor area, which changed AP counts substantially in teaching spaces.

  2. 02

    Agreed heritage-compliant mounting and containment with the estates team for six listed buildings before ordering anything.

  3. 03

    Ran four parallel installation teams on a building-per-week cadence, with validation surveys completed before each team moved on.

  4. 04

    Migrated authentication to certificate-based 802.1X with eduroam federation, tested with a 400-student pilot cohort in week three.

  5. 05

    Completed post-deployment validation surveys in every teaching space at modelled occupancy before term started.
